The Unexpected Slow Season

COVID-19 is here.

As the country slows down in response to this unprecedented pandemic, it can be tempting to look ahead to the coming weeks with dread or anxiety instead of seeing them as an opportunity for personal and business growth.

Sure, the phone may not be ringing off the hook and your open house signs might be gathering a bit of dust there in the corner, but there is still plenty to be done.

Don’t Waste Your TimeĀ 

Take this opportunity to intentionally reflect on last year’s busy season.

Or maybe it wasn’t so busy. Maybe everyone around you seemed to be basking in success while the world passed you by.

Either way, spend some time thinking about what was good about the past year and which parts you’d rather not repeat.

But let’s be real. Resting on our laurels don’t work, and moping over failures doesn’t help.

Here’s the real question…

What are you going to do to make this upcoming year better?

Get ahead of the game by organizing those thoughts and turning them into goals for the future.

If you had a time machine and could go back, what would you do differently?

What was the best encounter you had with a client in the past year?

What made it so wonderful?

How can you use these experiences to frame the upcoming season?

What are you going to do differently to encourage more positive interactions and discourage the negative ones?

The Present

You’ve reflected on the past and maybe written down some thoughts about the future but let’s take a moment and think about the right now.

Nobody saw the COVID-19 crisis coming, so plans and expectations have gone by the wayside. But you can decide right now what you’re going to do to put the year back on track. Whenever the slowdown ends, and it will, are you going to be ready for it?


Whatever perfection looks like for you, think of goals that get you closer to it. But take your time to create these goals.

Research shows that there is a wrong way and a right way to create a goal.

A goal that is too easy will not be alluring or promise much personal reward, so you probably won’t take steps to reach it, even though it might not take much effort.

The same thing goes for a goal that is too difficult. Goals that you perceive to be too hard are doomed from the start. In your mind, you’ve already failed and so you don’t even attempt to take the steps necessary to reach it.

Instead, choose a goal that is attainable, but challenging. Something that will provide you with a sense of accomplishment but not something that is impossible.

If your perfect day includes the use of groundbreaking technology to sell more homes, don’t set a goal that requires you to become an expert in real estate software in the next five weeks. Instead, try setting a goal that gives you three weeks to review two pieces of software that you are currently unfamiliar with and then build from there.
